Nearly 100 parents and potential students of Shining Rock Classical Academy took a seat in Beall Auditorium at Haywood Community College last Friday, anxiously waiting to see which students’ names were selected to attend the new school in the fall.

Haywood County's first public charter school, Shining Rock Classical Academy, will be opening its doors at 237 Ratcliff Cove Road this fall.

Shining Rock is on track to start classes for kindergarten through sixth grade this August. The school will open as a K-6 and plans to expand to K-12

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- Haywood County's first charter school is closer to reality. 

Shining Rock Classical Academy signed a five-year lease for almost 30 acres off Ratcliff Cove Road in Waynesville. The plan is to eventually buy it and make it the school's permanent home.

After signing a five-year lease for a 29-acre property on Ratcliffe Cove Road, just past the traffic circle in Waynesville, Haywood County’s first charter school will soon be able to move somewhere a little bigger than the single-room office it now rents downtown.

“It’s great to have options, especially public school options,” Eason said. “Charter schools give you a little more autonomy at the school level where you can choose your own curriculum. It’s not the curriculum that is provided by the state.”
